Kindergartner suspended for bringing toy bubble gun to school

A 5-year-old girl was reportedly suspended and sent home after she brought a toy bubble gun to school (video below).

The kindergartener took out the bubble gun out of her backpack to show friends her new toy before school had begun.

"I apologized right away and said that I am so sorry she did that", the mother identified only as Emma said, according[1] to ABC-affiliate KMGH.

Although Emma said she understood the motive behind the suspension, she said more common sense should have been used when making the decision. "Could we have a warning?"

After the Columbine shootings, many districts enacted zero-tolerance policies for weapons on school grounds, and there have since been numerous reports of children being suspended or expelled for obviously fake weapons such as pastry guns, Hello Kitty bubble guns[2], and even their own fingers as guns[3]. The school told[4] her she needed to pick up her daughter and take her home.

"This suspension is consistent with our district policy as well as how Southeast has handled similar situations throughout this school year". The district states other students at Southeast have had one-day suspensions for bringing items such as Nerf guns, stating, "students cannot only create a potential safety concern, but also cause a distraction".

Motorists have been paying street hawkers at least 200 naira to avoid massive queues at petrol stations, which often run dry. In 2012, the government was forced to back down on a similar price rise after nationwide protests.

In the wake of the Columbine school massacre, many districts began such zero-tolerance policies - followed by a number of controversial outcomes.

'The bringing of weapons, real or facsimile, to our schools by students cannot only create a potential safety concern but also cause a distraction for our students in the learning process.

Critics say the girl's punishment doesn't fit the crime and that this is just another example of how absurd the enforcement of zero-tolerance policies has become. "This includes asking parents to check backpacks".

Sounds to me like some of the staff in the school district should be suspended, not the little girl. "What bugs me is this is going to be something they can refer to if we have any issues in the future which I don't foresee, but it's always going to be lingering there in her school file".

The mother of the suspended 5-year-old girl also told the station she wants others to know that the elementary school's principal seemed unwilling to hear her out.
